Here’s a question: does any one here ever engage in Solo-RPG “Thought Experiments”? I have done so fairly often in the past, just to test new tools, see if a certain type of game, scene, or whatever “works”, or if I could figure out how to make it work, and so on.

Basically I just come up with a scene, idea, whatever (sometimes the coming up with the scene or idea IS the Experiment itself) & just tinker with running it & see what happens.

I’ve done this in the past with NPC emulation, NPC Conversation Emulation, trying out Mood and Emotion generators to see how they play, etc. Sometimes I tinker by using different tools together & seeing how they interact, what kind of results they generate, and the like. My latest game actually started out as an Experiment that was going so well I tried a little more. And a little more. Then I just kept going with it.

So what I’m saying for new Solo’ers, or even old hands, is that if you ever have questions of “can I do this or that” or “how do you do this thing or that thing” is don’t be afraid to just try stuff. Set up hypothetical situations & see how they turn out. Putter around with different ideas, tools, set-up’s & see what happens.

I’ve gotten a lot of questions to my channel about the decisions I make in setting up a solo adventure–everything from what kind of randomizing to use to how to choose an appropriate ruleset.

This vlog entry, “solo sci fi on the fly,” is a little bit behind-the-scenes of some decision-making as well as a more or less on the fly creation of a solo sci fi adventure. The main ruleset used is Hulks & Horrors though other rules are in play too.

I just posted a link to these in another thread, but I wanted to call attention to them. I just bought the PDF of them for use in my Spy & Vigilante games & feel like they’d be great spice for any modern Solo RPG in which HTH combat plays a significant role. I’m interested in the game they go with as well (“Operators”), but the cards are system neutral & can be used in any game.

Day 3 of my Journey campaign. Thaddeus begins exploring the port town of Diobel. He’s able to poke around a bit, get accosted by a drunk dwarf and meets a potential new frenemy.

For those curious my system has settled into a cycle:

1. Determine Thaddeus’s goal for the day.

2. Determine randomly if an event will occur to alter his plans.

3. If an event occurs, determine the BOLD Waylay.

4. Briefly imagine the course of the day and how the waylay fits in.

5. Use my modified Cartomancy system to determine if I successfully overcome the Waylay’s challenge.

6. Decide how that effects the rest of the day’s events.

7. Write the journal entry, and write a Discovery entry if the day was spent exploring instead of traveling.

Rebooting Journey RPG in what will hopefully be a more travel focused effort. Not too far into the journey yet as I’ve squeezed it among other responsibilities. I’m using the Inner Sea Mapfolio, Inner Sea Temples, and Pathfinder Ultimate Campaign books so far for the setting. And a mix match with no discernible pattern of Journey RPG, BOLD, Miso, and Mythic systems.
