Below is the first post of my new Solo play. This is just the prologue, so nothing terribly interesting happens in this session. I had been fighting with some formatting issues and decided to go “crude and messy” over “neat and clean” just to get this done so I could actually move on to the game.

Long story short, Hanson is on guard duty for Dona’s meeting, and the police show up. Pure coincidence? Or the beginning of something more?
it’s the later.
It is finally here! Simon Cogan completed and released the second edition of his brilliant Doctor Who Solitaire Storytelling Game!

This is my all-time favorite roleplaying game. It’s more organized and streamlined compared to the first edition. To play all you need is the four free files, available at the boardgamegeek link below. It takes maybe 20 to 30 minutes to learn the rules initially, and after that you’re good to go.

There is more replay value in this game than in almost any other. You have to check it out.

Solo Gaming Appreciation Month 2017 (SGAM2017)

Solo Gaming Appreciation Month 2017 (SGAM2017)

It’s coming. Every year, we all get together (virtually) to play games (by ourselves), so let’s get organized.

I’ll lead the organizing, which leads to two questions:

1) We recently lost Zach Best, a member of our community, to cancer. I propose that we dedicate SGAM 2017 to Zach. My plan is that we can collect our output during this month and put together a pdf that exemplifies solo gaming and the products that come out of our community. I am willing to curate (with the caveat that pdf production won’t occur until winter break). Are people willing to participate? What should go into this pdf?

2) How focused and organized do we want to be this year? In previous years we have tried to have some overarching ideas, such as images that everyone uses in their games. Do we want to continue that (if so, suggest ideas) or do we just want people to do what they want?

Looking forward to next month’s gaming challenge for me, running a solo PbtA game.

Here’s a fun mini game I’ve been using to add some spontaneity and surprise to conversations with NPCs. You’re character is allowed to say anything on his side of the conversation, but the NPC must use a word randomly rolled from this list of 100 common nouns during his/her turn. This list is tuned for a medieval fantasy setting, but could easily be tweaked for any setting.

E.G.

My character is in the Church of the Sun and is seeking the Head Priest in his quest for a holy artifact. He encounters a young man in robes walking hurriedly past.

PC: Excuse me good sir. I seek the leader of this temple.

NPC: [15: student] Yes, I am a student of his, may I ask why it is you seek Elder James?

PC: I’m on a quest given by the King himself. It is urgent and I must speak with him. He may hold crucial information.

NPC: [45: book] My master will often be found with in a book in his hand. I would hazard a guess that he is in the library.

PC: Thank you. Can you tell me where I might find the library?

NPC [37: area] The library is in the northern part of the temple. Near the garden area.

PC: Thank you again my friend.

I then hurry off to the library.
